Pizza in The Dog House in Howth

Earlier this year, I took a break and I am now back refreshed and ready to do more reviews. I was looking forward to attending and reviewing Taste of Dublin which had moved from Iveagh Gardens to Merrion Square. Sadly, I was not able to go as I was getting over a strep bug that was doing the rounds. I also stupidly got the Big Grill BBQ festival dates wrong so I sadly missed it. Next year I will do my best to attend Taste of Dublin and Big Grill.

Something, that I am finding disturbing is the amount of restaurants that are closing. This leaves me with less restaurants to review, and even though new restaurants are opening, how many are restaurants chains? Anyway enough about restaurants opening and closing and on with this week’s restaurant review.

This week’s restaurant is?

As you can see in the video above I was in Howth with a good friend of mine Anthony. We were there to attend the annual birthday party for the late great Phil Lynott. The birthday party started at 3 pm and when I left at 11:55 pm it was still going on strong. It was held in the Bloody Stream, beneath Howth dart station, and there was live music with numerous artists playing.

The restaurant we went to, The Dog House & Blues Tea Rooms was right next to the Bloody Stream. And the two main acts at the birthday party, Brush Shiels & Eric Bell were not on till later. So, we could hear the opening act as we had our meal.

The Dog House & Blues Tea Rooms, opened in 2010 and has become a firm favourite of locals and those further afield. When it first opened, it was a small tea/coffee market stall and it grew into the place it is today.

As you can see from the photos above The Dog House & Blues Tea Rooms, has a Bohemian look and feel. It looks a bit quirky too which adds to the charm of the restaurant.

What did I order?

The menu is big and varied leaving you spoilt for choice. I was only here for one thing, their amazing pizza but before that I had to have a Scooby Snack. No, Shaggy, Scooby and the rest of Mystery Inc are not here. A Scooby Snack is what starters are called on the menu.

We both had the Spicy Chicken Wings. Other Scooby Snacks available included Soup of the Day, Sea Food Chowder and Chicken Skewers. For our main courses we both opted for the Margherita Pizza. Other main courses include some pasta dishes and unsurprisingly some fish dishes as Howth, is a fishing village.

As The Dog House & Blues Tea Rooms only has a wine licence. We shared a jug of water and I also had a coke.

How was my meal?

As you can see below my chicken wings did not have too much sauce on them.

The Dog House & Blues Tea Rooms Chicken Wings

This, is one of my pet peeves, chicken wings with too much sauce on them. Things can get messy very quickly and you would need a bib to keep your clothes stain free. The chicken wings also had a nice kick to them without being too spicy. Your tastebuds will be able to handle a main course because the spicy chicken won’t overpower them.

My Margherita pizza was thin and crispy as you can see below.

The crust was not too big and I could easily finish all of the pizza. The pizza was also nice and thin and had the texture of a flat bread. This makes it an interesting pizza and not to  heavy either.

What did the meal cost?

Our Chicken Wings were €9.95 each, and our Margherita pizza’s were €10.95 each. My Coke was €3.50, and our jug of water was free. This brought the total bill to €45.30 before tip.

Being based by the Howth Dart Station, makes it easy to get to. Having being partly raised in the area, I know all the restaurants in Howth. Especially those sadly long gone, such as El Paso, the Tex Mex restaurant. So, you can expect to see me returning to Howth to do another review or two.
